Mauna Loa Solar Observatory makes possible observation of the sun and solar corona, and was established in 1965. National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) High Altitude Observatory operates MLSO for the National Science Foundation. The observatory, at NOAA's Mauna Loa Weather Observatory, is at 11,200 feet altitude. These instruments provide observations needed to understand the sun's continuous release of plasma and energy into interplanetary space.
