American hermit Dorothy Louise Molter, 1907 -1986, lived for 56 years in a small complex of hand-built cabins and tents in the wilderness near Knife Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of northern Minnesota. She was known as "Knife Lake Dorothy" or as the "Root Beer Lady". She made root beer and sold it to thousands of passing canoeists in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. She is standing near one of her winter cabins. This was taken in 1974.
