Peter Fechter Dying at the Foot of the Berlin Wall

Original caption: 8/18/1962-Berlin, Germany- East Berliner Peter Fechter, 18, lies dying on the Eastern side of the Communist's "Wall of Shame," after he was shot down by the Communist's People Police while attempting to escape to West Berlin. Hundreds of people from both sides looked on helplessly as the youth, the fiftieth victim of Communist police, went through the agony of death. His body was removed fifty-five minutes later. The slaying has brought criticism of the United States from city officials and a demand for western allied action.
