On June 17, 1928, Kansas-born aviator Amelia Earhart (1898-1937) became the first woman to cross the Atlantic by plane. In 1937, Earhart's plane disappeared in a flight over the Pacific. Her autobiography, Last Flight, was published in 1938 and edited by her husband, George Palmer Putnam.
