Jacques Brel (1929-1978) was a Belgian-born singer-songwriter and actor whose songs were known for their passion, emotional power and poetry. He is regarded by many as the best French language composer of all-time. He also dabbled in an acting and directorial career before moving to French Polynesia before recording a final album in Paris in 1977. He died of lung cancer aged 49.
