Yellow jersey leader Lance Armstrong (USA) and Ivan Basso (ITA) ride the 15.5 kilometres of the stage 16 mountain time trial from Bourg d'Oisans to L'Alpe d'Huez during the 2004 Tour de France. Armstrong was the only rider to complete the course in under 40 minutes, and thus secured his 21st yellow jersey. Basso finished in 2nd place, over 3 and a half minutes after Armstrong.
