Russian President Vladimir Putin (L) answers a journalist's question as German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder listens after talks at the presidential residence in Sochi, August 31, 2004. Putin said Russia is seeking broader ties with the European Union in forming four common spaces in the area of the economy, humanitarian affairs, science and security. "This process should take place on the principles of equality and mutual cooperation, taking account of mutual interests," Putin said following talks with French President Jacques Chirac and Schroeder in Sochi.
