Trieste: What It's all about....Seven years after the free territory of Trieste was created as a compromise between the Cominform and the Western Powers, it is still divided and still in ferment. For the British and Americans - the occupying Powers in Zone A - the Trieste dispute becomes increasingly embarrassing They seek the friendship of both Italy and Jugoslavia and cling to the pious hope that Rome and Belgrade will somehow sit down amicably and agree on the future of Trieste. Unluckily, Italy holds them to the proposal, made when Jugoslavia was still an apparently staunch Soviet Satellite, that the whole territory of Trieste should go to Italy.
