Francois-Dominique Toussaint l'Ouverture (c.1743-1803) was a freed slave who took part in a slave insurrection in Haiti, became the leader of the French republicans and forced the British to leave. He was in control of Haiti from 1801-02 but was defeated by General Leclerc's forces and sent to France as a prisoner where he died in prison.
