Escherichia coli bacterium viewed with a magnification of 8000x. The bacterium is important for three reasons: the species is always present in the normal human intestine, it can itself be a pathogen, and it is used in recombinant DNA technology to introduce new genetic material. The tiny hollow projections along the bacterium are pilli, which are used to attach to surfaces.
