Muhammad Ali Receives Replacement Medal

Muhammad Ali Receives Replacement Medal

When a young man returned from Rome and his Olympic win, Cassius Clay would wear his medal everywhere at first when he returned to Louisville. Angered at his inability to be served at a "whites-only" soda fountain at a five-and-dime, in disgust he threw the medal into the Ohio River. In 1996 at the Olympic Games, Muhammad Ali received a replacement medal for the one he threw away.
