Ground View of Saturn V Rocket Taking Off

Original caption: Apollo Headed for Orbit. Cape Kennedy, Florida: The Saturn V rocket is framed by Florida palms as it climbs skyward on its flight, November 9. Believed to be the mightiest space machine ever tested, the three-stage moon rocket, generating 160 million horsepower of fiery thrust, blasted off at 7 a.m. Key part of the payload was the cone-shaped Apollo spacecraft which was driven to an altitude of 11,286 miles, from where it plunged like a flaming meteor to a splashdown at speed astronauts would encounter on their return from the moon.
