Original caption: This mosaic of narrow-angle pictures taken by Surveyor VII's television camera on January 21st was assembled to show the surface sampler digging a trench. Later, the sensor head of the Alpha scattering instrument (upper left) was moved by the sampler onto the pile of soil excavated by by the sampler scoop from two parallel trenches. Elsewhere on the surface can be seen other results of sampler operations - trenches, bearing strength of tests and disturbed rocks. Surveyor VII was launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on January 7th, and landed on the moon's crater Tycho two days later.
